The table of contents in a PERRLA paper is built using the headings added throughout the paper. Learn more about adding a table of contents.
You may occasionally find an image or other object incorrectly showing up in your table of contents. There's a simple explanation, and it's easy to fix.
This usually happens when an image is pasted onto the same line as a heading, rather than on the line below it – often because Enter wasn't pressed after typing the heading before pasting the image.
To avoid this, always place images and other objects on the line below a heading, not on the same line.
If this has already happened in your paper, here's how to fix it:
- Place your cursor immediately after the heading.
- Press Enter.
- Highlight the image in the body of your paper.
- Click the PERRLA tab in Word.
- Click Text & Heading Style in the PERRLA ribbon.
- Choose Paragraph.
- Right-click anywhere within the table of contents.
- Choose Update Field.
- If prompted, choose Update entire table.
- Click OK.
The image will now have standard paragraph formatting and will no longer appear in the table of contents.
These same steps work for any unwanted object or text incorrectly appearing in the table of contents.
