Tables help present information and data that can at times be difficult to convey using words alone. Attempting to describe massive amounts of numerical data in the body of your paper can be difficult to read. When such data is presented in a table, it is much more easily interpreted.
How to Insert a Table
Like citations, tables are added to your paper wherever you place your cursor. Be sure your cursor is in your paper where you want the table to be inserted.
- Go to the PERRLA ribbon tab.
- Click Insert Table.
- Enter the details for your table: Table Title, Number of Columns, Number of Rows, and, if needed, Table Notes.
Table notes are optional. They're used to clarify information and avoid repetition in a table. If you choose to include table notes, click the Include Notes checkbox. - Click the Insert Table button.
PERRLA inserts your table where you originally placed your cursor.
Updating the Table Number (Word for Web)
If you're using the web-based version of Microsoft Word, then you'll have to update the table number manually. Microsoft's Word for Web does not support Table and Figure Numbering (yet).
In the PERRLA side panel, PERRLA provides instructions on how the table number should be styled and how to update it in your paper manually.
PERRLA will add automated table numbering to Word for Web once Microsoft makes the required updates.
Working with Your Table
Once your table has been added to the paper, you can edit its content, title, and notes directly in your paper. PERRLA sets it up for you with proper formatting, then lets you handle it from there.
