Here's how to create a citation in an APA 7 paper:
- Add a reference to your paper.
You can create a new reference or add an existing one from your library. - Place your cursor where you want the citation.
- Click + Add Citation beneath the reference in the PERRLA References & Citations panel.
- Under How should this citation read?, choose At the end of the sentence or In your sentence.
Each choice shows a preview of the citation. - If you're quoting the source, choose the location type next to Is it a direct quote? and type the value.
- Click Create Citation.
Note: PERRLA reads the paragraph you're writing when the panel opens, and it may fill in the panel for you. For example, if your sentence already names the author, PERRLA selects In your sentence and leaves the name out. PERRLA never changes the words you wrote.
Leaving Out Parts of a Citation
To choose exactly what a citation includes, click Adjust parts in the panel. It starts closed, with a short summary beside it, like "Name, date" or "Name left out."
Inside, you can include or leave out the Author's name, Date, and Location. By default, citations include every part the APA 7th Edition requires. If your sentence already names the author or gives the year, you can leave that part out of the citation.
